Click the widget to enable audio if the widget uses it. Note that modern browser security may prevent the widget from loading content from other web sites, however the widget should be able to load properly on the chumby devices. These previews are possible through the use of Ruffle ‐ note that Ruffle is still a work in progress, and not all Flash features are implemented, so some widgets may not perform optimally.

I really like this RSS reader. I have it installed on numerous channels and on all my devices... Sony Dash (2), Chumby and Insignia. Some of the RSS feeds are really good...and some not so much..but that is the programmer of the feed itself that messes up, not the app! I have several news feeds and some blogs, and enjoy them very much. Highly recommend you learn to use this feature...it opens a whole new world for your internet device!

Seems easy enough to just add the app for each feed you want? Wouldn't be that big of a deal, really.

@finchley - This app only supports one feed at a time. You may want to try out the Google Reader app to view multiple feeds. -chumby support

OK, so I'm a bit of a knucklehead but how do you add more than one feed?

Probably my favourite widget. I agree with the comment about lack of image support though. Would make it a lot prettier ... please add!

Unfortunately it doesn't support Russian language.

Update to my previous post: I wanted a much faster refresh of the RSS feed than the 15-minute interval I was getting. I've now got it refreshing the feed every minute after doing the following (not every step may be required, but this is working for me now): 1. Set the Expires: header on the web server to one minute past the file modification time. 2. Set the Reader display time to 45 seconds. 3. Added a second application to the channel with a 15 second time.

One star for lack of image support since nearly all RSS feeds now have images in them.

Does this widget honor the HTTP "Expires:" header? It looks like it has a fixed 15 minute refresh interval. If it's too difficult to implement Expires support, can we get get an extra control to set our own refresh interval? (I'm using this widget to make an office door sign, and my rss feed updates on 5 minute intervals).

hello es DUANE in the chumby-forum wrote it is usefull to write a comment to improve this application. for example i use the feed http://www.tagesschau.de/xml/rss2 and if there are umlaut (like ä,ö,ü) these characters and some of the following will not be displayed. i do not know what to change, but i hope it can be done

For me this is the most useful app out there. I use yahoo pipes to combine some of my favourite feeds in to one and it works great. One minor thing - ideally I'd like it to display the images from the BBC RSS feed. Perhaps if I understood pipes better this would be possible.

Just put this on my chumby and it works great with the two RSS feeds I have

I agree with others that it would be nice to have "umlaut" (or whatever) support to view the local characters correctly. Fortunately there is a workaround to view characters correctly, by using for example Feedcombine which seems to "correct" the chars: http://www.feedcombine.co.uk/

Funny, on some German speaking RSS Channels the Umlaut working fine, on other it doesn't at all. Is UTF-8 or ISO 8859-1 supported and corecctli implemented?

Would be great to have a RSS reader that supports Umlauts.

great widget! Is there a way for author chumby to update this widget to show properly non-english characters like Umlaute? In the meantime the Chumby is being sold also in Europe...

To those saying "you're using a US product and wanting umlauts?" Ever thought someone in the US might be wanting to display a feed that has some umlauts? I'm sure there are some Americans that speak more than one language...

It doesn't work like other RSS feeders in not showing already viewed posts.

I have problems with a .php rss feed. The widget states: "No articles found. RSS format may be unsupported." The link works fine in my web based rss-feed applications. Any comments on this, or how I can get around the problem.

It would be nice to have an "email link" button

"umlaute" would be a nice addition. Also, sometimes the pictures are not included although they are in the RSS: http://www.ibood.com/site/de/ibood.xml

Will it be possible for the Chumby RSS Reader to support videos?
derludl
– April 07 2008
bernie66, your rss feed from faz.net works with german Umlauten (äöü) because it is encoded in UTF-8. If it would be encoded using iso-8859-1 (Latin-1), you would not see any Umlaute, as e.g. Gunnar2008 reported and user LeTartar mentioned in a forum post. I tried to write my own RSS reader but could not find a way to read in XMLs using iso-8859-1 encoding. Anyone out there who knows how to do that?

It does work with german Umlauten but it gives me an "unsupported item format" for ex. under http://www.faz.net/s/Rub/Tpl~Epartner~SRss_~Ahomepageticker~E1.xml Same with german google rss feeds (but it shows the pictures)

This does not work well for me. First of all, it does not support the letter æ, ø and å, from Danish. The way that it handles this, is by removing whole words from the rss-feed, making it unreadable. This should be easy to fix? Also, many rss-feeds from newssites are actually links to their articles. It would be great if it was possible to show these links on the chumby...

It doesn't work with german Umlaute like äöüß :-(

I've had intermittent success - not sure if cache, sun console, what the issue is - I'm not giving up though b/c RSS is the secret in the sauce, and, if I can have me RSS, then I don't need no fancy widgets (though I really, really like the fancy ones - like Chumby 9000!)

Very useful way to add any site that provides RSS feeds to your Chumby. I'm suing several of them in my channel. Some support images and others don't.

It doesn't seem to support images.
