Flash Video Player
by stefandotti (community developer)popularity rank: 3
description: This widget takes a .flv flash video file and plays it back. Video files must have 320 width to fit the chumby screen. This widget works in cooperative mode. So it says when it is finished playing the video. Changelog: 2.0: * UI changes * Complete rewritten Code 1.2: * Movie will not play automatic. Added 'Play Video?' question. * Volume and Seek informations are shown in the lower left corner when changing them. Please report any error.
Click the widget to enable audio if the widget uses it. Note that modern browser security may prevent the widget from loading content from other web sites, however the widget should be able to load properly on the chumby devices. These previews are possible through the use of Ruffle ‐ note that Ruffle is still a work in progress, and not all Flash features are implemented, so some widgets may not perform optimally.

Chumby newbie here. Do you have a step-by-step guide on how to configure this play flv files from the usb drive? Everyone keeps saying "edit the file location setting". Where is that and how do I edit it?

When i try to use this on my chumby classic It just times out. Tapping the screen is not an option given. Nor does it recognize that I am tapping the screen. I am trying to play movies that I have saved on a usb saved in FLV format and 320 ratio. Any suggestions?

Ok just figured out in the forum there seems to be a problem with the combination of vlc and how the Flash Player handles .flv streams and its headers: http://forum.chumby.com/viewtopic.php?id=5150 I guess we need to wait for the hgroover to fix it.

Ok, I also had the time to test again with the new version but no luck. I tried a lot of settings and I can see data flowing using my firewall but nothing is played.

Thanks for your help. I added width=320 fps=12 to the transcode string and even lowered the bit rate to 350kps, it didn't make any difference. I'll have to wait for the update.

The stream is working and is displayed without any chunks. I am currently developing a new version of the player. So stay tuned. I will be releasing it soon. Some testing and some feaures needs to be done. Note: You have to encode the video with 320 pixels width. So the chumby does not have to resize the video.

Using the command line from stefandotti I found out, that if I press pause-play-pause-play many times, I sometimes get one picture on the chumby and a chunk of audio. My network stats show, that the whole time the stream is received and data is transmitted. I sshed into the chumby and found out that right after I pressed play the following message appears: 2010-05-19 22:29:03 ChumbyVidStats::Dump() completed codec ? 0/0 keyframes (0 bytes) dropped, 0/0 P-frames (0 bytes), 0/0 other frames (0 bytes) dropped 2010-05-19 22:29:03 width 0 (0 scaled), height 0 (0 scaled) rate 0 fps 2010-05-19 22:29:03 elapsed time 0.000s data transferred = 0K Still data is transmitted. Please get this fixed as I really like the idea of an universal remote display!

I'm using version 1.0.5. For streaming configuration I'm using this: --sout=#transcode{vcodec=FLV1,acodec=mp3,channels=2,samplerate=44100}:std{access=http,mux=ffmpeg{mux=flv},dst=0.0.0.0:8091/stream.flv}" --no-sout-keep (vlc gui does not provide an otion for flv streaming)

I see your problme but i can't get VLC to stream to FLV with your specified HTTP url. Which version of VLC are you using?

Hello. I'm trying to stream live television to the chumby using vlc on a pc and this widget. If I let vlc record to a file, I can play that file in the widget. However if I choose to have an http stream, the widget reports "FINISHED Play again?" and doesn't play it. Needless to say the video works fine in the browser. Codec is FLV1, mux is (ffmpeg)FLV and url is: http://myip:8090/stream.flv Any suggestion?

Hi! Thank you very much for this widget. I think is really useful to have it on the chumby. But now I am triying to play a list of videos. Would it be possible to use any kind of playlist? If it is not, I would gladly implement this option if you would share the original widget code with me. I am registered in the forum with this same nickname :)

I do not understand your question. There is a configuration dialog for every widget on the chumby. So there is also one for this. That is the place where you have to set the path to the video.

I don't think i will add the feature to load SWFs. It is only a video player. Not a Container to load other Flash Content.

I enjoy this a ton, thanks. Will you be making a SWF player to load external SWFs?

OK, it looks like changing the URL to have only two slashes after "file:" does the trick...maybe this is due to a change in the Chumby One vs. the Classic. Bottom line... This works: file://mnt/usb/sample.flv .... This does not: file:////mnt/usb/sample.flv Thanks to all who have posted about this. Just got a huge laugh from a FLV of SNL Jeopardy..."You'll RUE the day you crossed me, Trebek."

OK, newbie Chumby One user here as of today, I have tried placing a flv file on two USB sticks but I can’t seem to get the Chumby to play it. original file location: http://gallery.rphmedia.net/albums/userpics/10001/jacko.flv plays a little choppy, but Chumby found and played the file. I save the file to the USB stick as sample.flv, and change the widget using "customize" to point to file:////mnt/usb/sample.flv and reloaded the channel on the Chumby... Now it can't find the file but it doesn't say anything about not being able to find the file, I just see "Play Video?" and "widget timed out". I updated the Chumby One this morning upon opening the box. There are no other files on USB stick and I have formatted the USB stick using FAT and FAT32 before copying the flv file…if I replace the filename with the original URL and reload the channel, I can see the original file again. I must be missing something pretty basic...any suggestions are appreciated. I do like the default video (ST trailer) when I loaded the viewer without providing a file name/URL. Thank you.

For playing files from USB, you just need to specify the correct path to the file. For Example: file:////mnt/usb/sample.flv

ah. i forgot to explain the controls. use your finger to: * touch the screen and move it left/right to go fast forward/backward * move up/down to increase/decrease the volume * hit the screen like you would with a button and the movie pauses. do it again and it continues playing. when the video is paused (not playing) you have 15 seconds to start it before the next widget starts.

When i try to set a file that isn't there it says 'file not found'. Once you have set anything in the config dialog you will never see the default video playing again.

This widget does not seem to work on Virtual Chumby. It plays the default flv but will not play the 2 flv files that I tried.

Great simple widget. It'd be awesome if it can take an URL for RSS feed containing multiple FLV urls in enclosures/links and plays them in order.
