Clock and Temperature
by ehertz (community developer)popularity rank: 44
description: This is a simple app to display the current time and temperature. This revised version of the widget uses the temperature supplied by OpenWeatherMap.org. The colors used in the application can be set by the user by entering hexadecimal color codes. You can find these codes at http://www.december.com/html/spec/colorsafe.html. This new version works for international locations, as well as US locations. Specify US locations by ZIP code, and places in other countries by the name of the city.
Click the widget to enable audio if the widget uses it. Note that modern browser security may prevent the widget from loading content from other web sites, however the widget should be able to load properly on the chumby devices. These previews are possible through the use of Ruffle ‐ note that Ruffle is still a work in progress, and not all Flash features are implemented, so some widgets may not perform optimally.

OpenWeatherMap.org seems to be more stable over the last few days, so I went back to version 3.25, which will update your temperature reading every 15 minutes (as opposed to the 4 hours on WorldWeatherOnline.com). If you do see problems, let me know, so I can change the app again, if necessary.

I reverted the version to 2.53, which is the last version that used WorldWeatherOnline.com as the temperature source. The major drawback is that because of the limited number of queries allowed for a free account, the temperature is only updated once every four hours. If you see any problems, please let me know. Also, I will keep monitoring OpenWeatherMap.org so that when they get their server problems fixed, I can go back to them as the temperature source, which will allow much more frequent temperature updates.

Based on the comments appearing today on the openweathermap.org website, the server used by "free" accounts, like mine, are still not working correctly, with no estimate on when the issue will be resolved. I will look at alternatives.

Hi meinholdm. No, you don't need any special code. The problem is on openweathermap.org's end. Two or three weeks ago, people using that site complained that the server that processes ZIP codes was not working correctly. The server admin said they were putting a high priority on fixing the problem. However, as you observe, the situation is getting worse, not better. I am thinking about moving back to worldweatheronline.com, but have not done that yet. I am sorry about the problem you (and the rest of the folks using this app) are seeing.

Do I need a special code for openweathermap.com? My temperature never updates; it reads Mam (I think, can't read all of the letters). Thanks.

I updated this widget to version 2.51. The change is to add a thin bar on the right side of the screen to show how long ago the temperature being displayed was retrieved. The current temperature is retrieved every 20 minutes. The progress bar on the right will grow as time elapses, reaching the top of the screen just before a new temperature is requested, so you can quickly tell how old the temperature is by looking at the height of the bar.

This app works wonderfully now! I missed it and am very glad to have it back. I use it every day. Thanks!

No problem Uncajim0. I am working on relearning and reconstructing what I did. It just turns out to take more time than I had anticipated. Flash and ActionScript are just not software that I am very comfortable with either.

I am not much of a programmer, sorry to say, especially in Flash. I wish I could do more.

Hi Uncajim0. Thanks for your note. The problem I have run into is that I discovered, much to my annoyance, that Adobe Flash Professional 2014 has very different functionality than the version of Flash that I originally wrote this app in. So the bottom line is that I am trying to relearn Flash programming not quite from scratch, but pretty close to it, by watching Lynda.com videos. I do appreciate your offer of help. By any chance, do you have any experience with Flash programming? I would be happy to release the source code to you, and you might be able to get this done much faster than I seem to be able to handle. If you want to work on this together, feel free to PM me through the forum, and I will get in touch with you through my private email account. I really do apologize for the delay. I am very frustrated with myself also.

Thanks again for this wonderful app. Just checking in about getting the temperature function fixed and re-offering help if needed.

Great to hear! This is my favorite Chumby app because on work days I get up early in the morning and stumble downstairs for a shower trying not to wake anyone else in the house. When I can get accurate temperatures, I know how to dress for the day. Further, my 4-year-old daughter likes it because she can change the colors. I look forward to the update! Thanks again for writing it in the first place. Let me know if there is anything I can do to help.

Thanks very much Uncajim0. I am glad that you like this app. The short answer is yes, it will be fixed, but probably not until November or December because of some other issues right now that are taking priority. The longer answer is that the provider I use for temperature, worldweatheronline.com, made some changes to their service that I need to compensate for. My hope is to rewrite this app so that it offers a selection of the current weather provider, plus an alternate provider or two, so if this problem comes up again, it is easier for everyone to make a switch.

So I love this app, but it no longer displays temperature. Is there a way to fix it? I use Insignia chumbies if that matters...

This had worked after the relaunch, but has recently stopped being able to get temperatures; a couple of C1s and the preview on the web site all report "current temperature is not available". Any ideas?

Hi ChadNL. Thanks for the response. Can you get in touch with me via [email protected] ? I reactivated that account, and then we can work on this off the board.

Sorry ehertz, been busy and forgot to check back in. Thanks for getting back to me. I have a Chumby 8 & use a few different channels that interchange. I set up my chumby to use Clock & Temperature then Facebook Photos, Then Clock & Temperature, then Google Calendar, back to Clock & Temperature, then Weatherbug and cycle. I think the Clock & Temperature app is on for 2-3 minutes then the other apps for around 1 minute. In a moment I'm going to remove a couple apps and just cycle Clock & Temperature with Facebook Photos and see if that does anything different. I'll keep you posted. Thanks again!

Thanks very much ChadNL. Can you provide a little more info about your Chumby, i.e., is it a classic, chumby one, insignia infocast, etc.? Do you keep your chumby one one channel all the time, or do you switch channels at different times of the day? Is this widget the only widget in the channel, or do you have multiple widgets switching every minute or so? I would like to try to replicate your problem. (I also know I need to get back to learning more about Flash Develop to get some new features added.)

I saw you posted an update in February, but I'm still having problems with the Temperature not updating for a couple days. Do you know of a fix for this? I really like your app. Thanks for the hard work!

I am working on an updated version of this widget. My plan is to incorporate the following changes: - bug fix for Chumby8 not updating temperature reading for long periods - bug fix for selection of Celsius or Farenheit in configuration script not always working reliably - add support for 12 and 24 hour display - add temperature reading time to caption under temperature Any other suggestions are welcome. The first version was developed using Adobe's Flash Professional free 30 day trial, which has expired. I am now trying to make the transition to FlashDevelop, which is taking longer than I would like. So please be patient.

Hi tennesseetango34. I wish there was a way to calibrate. The problem relates to the service I am using to get the temperature, and how often they read. When I checked the temperature for your zip code on different sites within the last few minutes, I found significant differences. For example, worldweatheronline.com had 50, weather.com had 52, weather.yahoo.com had 50, wunderground.com had 48, and weatherbug.com had 50. The times associated with their readings we very different, ranging from over an hour ago to "current". Also, the actual reading location assigned was different, from Atlee Field, to Powell, to Oak Ridge. I am using worldweatheronline.com, because it is free, and seems to be comprehensive in terms of locations available. Some others are also free, like weatherbug, but seem to be very inaccurate (at least in my area), and have far fewer stations. Others, like wunderground.com, are free for the first 500 readings a day, but after that, I need to set up a commercial account. So my advice is to check worldweatheronline.com and see if by putting in different locations/zip codes in your area, you can find one that seems more accurate for your particular area, and then use that in the customization screen for this widget.

I really like this clock! Looks nice and clear on my trusty ChumbyOne.

My "Clock and Temperature 1.10" temperature is possibly 6-8 degrees off. How can I calibrate the temperature on my Chumby8 to my specific location; i.e., Knoxville, Tennessee 37931? Thanks.

Daveone, I have noticed that my Chumby8 has been giving very different temperatures than my two Chumby Ones. Essentially, It looks like the Chumby8 will hold a temperature reading for hours, even if the temperature sent by the source is changing. I had a discussion with an experienced Flash programmer who thinks it may be an issue with how Flash caches websites. We are going to work on some mods to try to force the cache to flush. Assuming I get it resolved, I will post an updated version in the next few days.

Hi daveone. I am getting temperatures from www.worldweatheronline.com. I just compared their current report for "Cape Town, South Africa" to that reported by Yahoo weather and weather.com. It is a couple of degrees higher, but, close. Can you let me know if the temperature you are seeing is what worldweatheronline is reporting for your location?

Thanks joelbs. I am glad things are now working. I think what you are seeing is an artifact of the Chumby system. As I understand it, after you enter the customization values into this app (or any other), the info is stored on the main Chumby server, waiting for your Chumby to phone home. It will do that about every five minutes, asking the chumby.com server if that server has any updates for your Chumby. At that point, the new values for the screen colors are downloaded to your Chumby. So there will always be a delay between setting up the customization screen, and the new stuff showing up on your Chumby. From what I have seen, that delay might be as long as 15 minutes sometimes.

I'd enter the hex values and click save, the values were saved but nothing changed on my chumby 8. I just checked the app and now the colors have changed!

Hmm. Can you let me know what you are entering in the color customization boxes? If you try just changing the background color to say FFFFFF (white) without changing anything else, and save that, does the background change? If you click the Customize link after saving that change, was the change saved? Also, what device are you using. I tested this on a Chumby One and a Chumby 8, but, I don't have an original Chumby. You can post here, or contact me directly through [email protected] . Thanks very much for the info. We'll get this right.
