USB Music

description: USB Music plays mp3's from a USB stick and requires a script installed (simply copy files to USB and reboot chumby - very easy) - details [[http://forum.chumby.com/viewtopic.php?pid=29945#p299457|here]], so won't run on virtual chumby. Features are similar to normal MP3 player but with default and night mode extras - I have documented the interface [[http://notjunior.net/chumby/help/usbandlanmusichelp.html|here]]. Note Flash Lite does not like (wont play or plays funny) some mp3's - sorry its a bit hit and miss. Load time depends on USB speed / file count. Set the config to forever so does not time out. Have Fun.
Click the widget to enable audio if the widget uses it. Note that modern browser security may prevent the widget from loading content from other web sites, however the widget should be able to load properly on the chumby devices. These previews are possible through the use of Ruffle ‐ note that Ruffle is still a work in progress, and not all Flash features are implemented, so some widgets may not perform optimally.

gminpa - part 2 - this is just a widget like any other - any alarms actions will trigger as per normal behavior. cheers Nigel

gminpa - the approach is as follows - if you select a single file it just plays that file only and stops. If you select a folder then all files are played and from memory it loops back at the end. cheers Nigel

Hi Nigel, I'm hoping this works a bit better than the default "My Files" function. Specifically: 1.) If I enter folder "abc" which has nine files (named f1, f2, f3... f9), select file "f3" and press "Play," what happens after file "f3" has played completely? (a.) Playing stops? (b.) File "f4" plays, then "f5" etc. until end of "f9" and then stops? (c.) File "f4" plays, then all files through "f9" and then back to "f1" etc. forever? (d.) Other (please describe)? 2.) Also, after all playback is finished, and Chumby is perhaps in your night mode, it appears that Chumby will stay "in" your app. What is the implication if I have previously set some alarm using the factory's "Alarm" function? Will it run, or do I need to exit your app, manually, first? Thanks very much, in advance...

Hi Horse, sorry but making a simpler one is a bit much effort - what I can do though is create a page that describes the interface. I will link to this in the comments above (give me a few days thought to get it done).

Thanks for this. Since the "play USB music" feature on my chumby is now borked, this is the only thing that will let me play music. One file plays in squeaky fast-forward but most others seem OK I've no idea what all the buttons do on here, so if you could make a simpler version that would be great. select/play/stop/repeat-on-loop would be fantastic :)

This looks promising - so if I mount an NFS share in lieu of using a USB stick we should be able to achieve the long requested Chumby uPNP like music player functionality we've always wanted... Sweet :)

paganaye - the basic structure for identifying and getting files could be re used but would need to change the music playing part for video and also a bit of screen swapping. It could be done though. Happy to add it to my long term list. cheers Nigel

devaux, there is not way to directly create a playlist in the widget but you can get similar result by the way you order folders on the USB drive. The widget will play either a single song or a full folder of songs (including sub folders) - hence you could have folders ordered in many ways on the USB drive - one way is by artist / album, another is by playlist - also you can have multiple copies of songs on the USB drive as MP3's don't take up a lot of room. Hope this helps. cheers Nigel

Awesome! I really missed the built-in "My Music Files" feature when it stopped working (Chumby support told me it's a bug in the last update that they're working on fixing), but that was frustrating when it worked, anyway, since you couldn't see a list of the files or even guess which order they were going to play in! You can see that here, and it seems to order the files in a predictable alphabetical way! :-) Speaking of order, I figured out how to get the shuffle feature to work -- put the files you want to shuffle in a folder, select that folder, put shuffle on, & then play. Now I can put in my USB drive with all the extant Goon Show episodes on it and listen to random episodes like I used to in "My Music Files"! :-) Oh, and it looks like it doesn't like VBR files? I usually rip my CDs to VBR MP3s, but I couldn't get this to play those.
