LAN Music

description: LAN Music plays mp3's from a CIFS/SMB share and requires a script installed (simply copy files to USB and reboot chumby - very easy) - details [[http://forum.chumby.com/viewtopic.php?pid=30754#p30754|here]], so won't run on virtual chumby. You need to configure a share in chumby.com. Some comments on share setup 1 use IP address instead of server name 2 include a user name even if share is open to everyone 3 use a limited account - name and password are encrypted but they are not bullet proof. I have only used it on windows share not sure if it will work on NAS box Features are similar to normal MP3 player but with default and night mode extras - I have documented the interface [[http://notjunior.net/chumby/help/usbandlanmusichelp.html|here]]. Note Flash Lite does not like (wont play or plays funny) some mp3's - sorry its a bit hit and miss. Set the config to forever so does not time out. Have Fun.
Click the widget to enable audio if the widget uses it. Note that modern browser security may prevent the widget from loading content from other web sites, however the widget should be able to load properly on the chumby devices. These previews are possible through the use of Ruffle ‐ note that Ruffle is still a work in progress, and not all Flash features are implemented, so some widgets may not perform optimally.

Hi andtheand2 the message yiu mention is general. Not sure what chumby you have but this app was built for the classic. I dont have or tested any others so cant really help. I dont really support chumby apps any more as am quite disappointed with chumby ind. They promise lots and deliver little. cheers Nigel

hi nigel, first of all, thanks a lot for all the work! I've tried to installed the script and widget as you described it, but it seems not working. When I start the widegt I always get the message "this widget requires a script to be installed..." Does this mean, that the installation of the script didn't worked? Or is this just a standard message? Perhaps there is a way to check on the chumby if the script is installed...

I wonder if some of these "Error Loading File List" problems are (as I think mine is too) related to extended-ASCII (> 0x7F) characters in the fetched file names. See my note here http://forum.chumby.com/viewtopic.php?pid=36263#p36263 and also that of Ursula/Doug just above that.

Sorry guys cant really help here - not sure why the script isnt executing - what you can do as a test is run the script from a local PC browser using following URL http://your_chumby_ip/cgi-bin/custom/lanmusic.pl?FILELIST If this work then the script is running - if not then it isn't. My testing is all done on the classic chumby. Only thing I can think of is that the script has not been given execution rights. cheers Nigel

I have the same issue, pdsavio. Looks like the perl script isn't executed from the Flash app and eventually times out (that's why it takes so long to load I guess?). The mus folder isn't created, the share isn't mounted and the tmp file not created. When running http://my-chumby-ip/cgi-bin/custom/lanmusic.pl?filelist?cifs?192.168.x.x?Music?Guest? from a browser, the tmp file is here, and the Windows share is mounted in /psp/cgi-bin/mus -- Nigel, any idea? I see that on all my Chumbys, classic, 3.5 and 8 Insignia

Hi, Just tried this and I'm having problems. The widget always complains about "Error Loading Filelist". I know the thing is configured correctly because I'm able to get the file list when I goto this link from a computer web browser: http://my-chumby-ip/cgi-bin/custom/lanmusic.pl?filelist Another thing I noticed was that (via ssh) the lanmusic.tmp file does not get created when the widget runs and eventually fails, however after accessing the link above from the computer web browser the file does get created.

Hi zurk - thanks for the feedback but in this case it would not make much difference. In the end it comes down to a single command that attaches the remote share and it either works or doesn't - limitations in the chumby I am afraid - hence tracking the progress would not reveal much - cheers Nigel

Hi zurk - thats good - sounds like your well setup and understand the topic. I had a play with this on the weelkend and tried NFS rather than CIFS to fix the problem but to no avail. I suspect the problem is the limited network support on the chumby and to be honest its a bit out of my hands. Basically all i do is map the share then read it. You could test your config by trying to attach to a windows share (this works ok for me) - one tip though is put a username in (even if shared to everyone) as it seems to make a difference. I will keep having a look into NFS and let you know if I get any results. Sorry I could not help further Nigel.

Hi Zurk - that's a very short description to work with so maybe if I describe the whole process from high level. First you need to install the scripts - as you have said above - put them on USB and boot and it should install but on its own wont do anything. Second Install the widget in a channel through the web site. Three configure the widget on the web site to point to a share that you have already setup somewhere on your network The widget does not scan the network just lets you play music that you are publishing via a share. Sorry but if you don't understand setting up network shares then this is likely to be a bit too technical. cheers Nigel
